La Tour d’Ostrevant<\/h1>\n

Construit en 1164 par Bauduin IV, dit \u00ab\u00a0l’\u00c9difieur\u00a0\u00bb, Comte de Hainaut, ce donjon servait aussi, au XIVe si\u00e8cle de tour de guet o\u00f9, des hommes d’armes, fournis tour \u00e0 tour, par les villages d’Ostrevant, veillaient jour et nuit \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de la ville et ses environs.<\/h3>\n

Ayant subit les d\u00e9gradations de si\u00e8ges successifs, ce donjon est transform\u00e9, sous Charles Quint en \u00e9l\u00e9ment d’architecture militaire. Int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 l’enceinte fortifi\u00e9e, il est aras\u00e9, ouvert et am\u00e9nag\u00e9 partiellement en prison au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e. Enchemis\u00e9 pour renforcer ses parois et rempli de terre, il prend l’aspect d’un gros cube haut de 15 m\u00e8tres. Sa partie sup\u00e9rieure est un cavalier pouvant recevoir des pi\u00e8ces d’artillerie ; on y trouve aussi, une petite tour de guet et un campanile (visible sur la gravure de Cro\u00ff)<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 locale ainsi que l’ouverture et la fermeture des portes chaque jour.<\/h3>\n

Entre 1738 et 1740, on vide la terre qu’il contenait pour y construire sur 3 niveaux, les splendides cloisonnements vo\u00fbt\u00e9s que l’on peut admirer actuellement.<\/h3>\n

La tour d’Ostrevant a servi de prison jusqu’en 1918.<\/h3>\n

En 1939, le G\u00e9nie du 3\u00e8me\u00a0corps d’artillerie command\u00e9 par le \u00a0G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la Laurencie couvre la Tour d\u2019une chape de b\u00e9ton arm\u00e9 en y incorporant une tourelle blind\u00e9e d\u2019observation.<\/h3>\n

Au cours des combats de 1940, cette position, tenue par le 45\u00b0 RI – Lieutenant Sabatier – a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le important dans la d\u00e9fense de la Ville Haute.<\/h3>\n

Le Mus\u00e9e d’Ostrevant<\/h1>\n

Le mus\u00e9e de Bouchain, labellis\u00e9 Mus\u00e9e de France, est situ\u00e9 dans la tour d’Ostrevant, construite au XIIe si\u00e8cle, class\u00e9e Monument Historique.<\/h3>\n

Quelques Bouchinois, conscients de la richesse historique de l’ancienne capitale du Comt\u00e9 d’Ostrevant, ont fond\u00e9 une association en 1972. Ils ont obtenu de la municipalit\u00e9, d’utiliser la tour d’Ostrevant pour y cr\u00e9er un mus\u00e9e d’histoire locale. Ce donjon retrouve alors un peu de son prestige pass\u00e9.<\/h3>\n

Il renferme des collections qui se sont constitu\u00e9es et enrichies au fil des ans : dons pr\u00eats, achats.<\/h3>\n

Les expositions sont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es par des passionn\u00e9s, sur deux des trois niveaux que comporte la tour, dans le cadre magnifique d’une architecture parfaitement conserv\u00e9e.<\/h3>\n

Une partie de ce niveau, ayant servi de prison depuis Charles Quint jusqu’en 1918, comporte de nombreux et myst\u00e9rieux graffitis inscrits dans la pierre par les prisonniers.<\/h3>\n

On peut y reconna\u00eetre des signes religieux, des objets de la vie quotidienne et des t\u00e9moignages de leur appartenance \u00e0 l’arm\u00e9e : le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00e9tant un soldat de Charles Quint dont on reconnait parfaitement l’uniforme.<\/h3>\n

On quitte la prison en franchissant une porte de bois impressionnante qui aurait beaucoup \u00e0 raconter. Par l’ext\u00e9rieur, on se dirige vers le premier \u00e9tage en contournant la tourelle d’angle, o\u00f9 l’on aper\u00e7oit \u00e0 mi hauteur, la premi\u00e8re\u00a0porte de la cellule du condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 mort.<\/h3>\n

En remontant le temps, l’histoire de la place forte de Bouchain s’y raconte au travers des diff\u00e9rents si\u00e8ges, guerres et invasions que connut la ville fortifi\u00e9e depuis la fin du VIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/h3>\n

Les combats de mai 1940 sont particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9voqu\u00e9s et l’on peut y voir un reportage de la visite d’Adolf Hitler et de son \u00e9tat-major, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par des photographes de l’arm\u00e9e allemande.<\/h3>\n

Elle est membre de l\u2019Association pour la mise en valeur des Sites Fortifi\u00e9s du Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Picardie.<\/h4>\n
